FNDS Newsletter - April 2022

You don't want to miss this.

2022 Volume 2, Number 2

Welcome to the 4th International Conference on Functional Neurological Disorder (June 19-21, 2022, Boston University). You can attend in-person or virtually. This multi-disciplinary conference brings together leading international experts, from a range of backgrounds including neurology, physiology, psychiatry, psychology and ethics. The conference is suitable for anyone wanting to improve their clinical skills in this area as well as those with a research interest in this fascinating and evolving topic. Functional disorders are the second commonest reason for a referral to a neurologist. The International Conference covers all functional neurological disorders, adding sessions on symptoms such as dizziness, speech and cognitive symptoms. The inaugural functional movement disorder meeting took place in 2004, with meetings to follow in 2009 and 2017, with supplemental standalone meetings on non-epileptic seizures.

Speaker Spotlight

Daniel Clauw, MD is Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine (Rheumatology) and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan and a global leader in chronic pain. His job title alone shows his immensely diverse and cross speciality approach. His JAMA review article on Fibromyalgia in 2014 and contribution to a 2021 Lancet article on Nociplastic Pain are must-reads for anyone working with people who have FND. The organisers are really thrilled he could join the meeting. Chronic pain is so common in FND, our field really needs to grapple with how to relate the two fields in classification, diagnosis, mechanism and treatment (also see Maggio et al Brain Comms 2020). We couldn't have anyone better than Daniel Clauw to help us think about these issues.

Dr. Jiao is a rehabilitation physician at the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. He and his team have just started a new multidisciplinary day therapy service for the management of Functional Neurological Disorders. The team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dieticians and psychologists.
