Cheers to 2024 and Onward to 2025: The Year Ahead for the FND Society

Dear Colleagues,

Without a doubt, 2024 proved to be an exceptional year for the FND Society.  There is no better proof of this than our coming together, both in-person and virtually, for the 5th International Conference held in Verona, Italy.  As 2024 comes to a close, the FND Society continues to reach new members across the world, advance collaborations in science, education, and clinical services, and bring together a vibrant coalition of those committed to caring for people living with FND.

While we celebrate this past year, we are laser-focused on our efforts to build on these successes.  Here, we will share many exciting opportunities in the year ahead, starting with several pertinent sessions scheduled for the American Epilepsy Society’s (AES) Annual Meeting to be held this week in Los Angeles, California, December 6-10!  You will also discover details regarding our Rehabilitative Therapies 101 Course, the next in a series of widely accessed continuing education courses through the FND Society, as well as a hybrid course titled Functional Seizures and Epilepsy: Cutting Edge Diagnostics, Biology and Management scheduled for June, 2025.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Glenn Nielsen, physiotherapist and Senior Lecturer at St. George’s University of London, in our Meet the Founders column.  Dr. Nielsen, a founding member of the FND Society, shares insights into his fascinating research portfolio, pathway to specialization in FND, and a passion for live music!  And for the FND Research Corner, Gabriele Vilyte, psychology graduate student at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, describes her important work in characterizing clinical features in people with functional seizures and the application of machine learning in differentiating functional from epileptic seizures in public healthcare systems.

We wish each of you a joyful, restful, and meaningful year ahead!

Rehabilitative Therapies 101 Continuing Education Course

Following previous high-yield and popular continuing education (CE) courses, FND: Putting Principles into Practice and FND: Psychological Treatment 101, the FND Society will soon launch our next virtual course focused on rehabilitative therapies.  Chaired by our very own Dr. Glenn Nielsen and Dr. Sarah Lidstone, we will learn from expert occupational therapists, speech pathologists/speech & language therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, social workers, and specialist physicians.  The objectives will be applicable to all who are involved in the care of people living with FND.  Modules will touch on themes of treatment planning and education, assessment, therapeutic techniques, adapting treatments to pediatric populations, relapse prevention, integrating body and mind, psychological safety, and viewing rehabilitative therapy through the patient perspective.

The course is anticipated to be available through the FND Society website by early 2025.  Keep an eye out for this incredible training!
