Course Description

Following previous high-yield and popular continuing education (CE) courses, FND: Putting Principles into Practice and FND: Psychological Treatment 101, the FND Society is excited to announce the next FNDS virtual course focused on rehabilitative therapies.  

FND: Rehabilitation 101 is a virtual education course designed to equip healthcare professionals with essential rehabilitation skills for assessing and treating people with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). Chaired by our very own Dr. Glenn Nielsen and Dr. Sarah Lidstone, you will learn from expert occupational therapists, speech pathologists, speech & language therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, social workers, and specialist physicians. The objectives apply to all who are involved in the care of people living with FND. Modules will touch on themes of treatment planning and education, assessment, therapeutic techniques, adapting treatments to pediatric populations, relapse prevention, integrating body and mind, psychological safety, and viewing rehabilitative therapy through the patient perspective.

Course Format

The course is divided into 6 modules, 20 video presentations, and over 5 hours of content covering the history taking and assessment of FND, specific skills for rehab specialists, consideration of mind-body techniques, safety issues in rehabilitation, the patient perspective on recovery, and adapting treatment for young people.

This virtual educational course will be offered using an "on-demand" format. Those who register will have access to the 20 pre-recorded lectures for viewing on their own time.

Presentation Format

The course consists of 20 video presentations, each lasting 10-35 minutes when played from beginning to end. All lectures are recorded and available in an MP4 format, which plays like a conventional video recording that can be stopped and started as needed.

Target Audience

Rehabilitation specialists, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, nurses, and any FND physician, including neurologists, psychiatrists, and physiatrists. Ideal for providers with a minimum of 2 years' experience and some exposure to FND, who want to learn new skills and/or improve their existing skills.

1. To be able to plan and implement an individualized rehabilitation package for people with FND
2. To be able to adapt your subjective history-taking skills to the specifics of FND rehabilitation
3. To be able to use education about FND as a rehabilitation tool
4. To identify a range of practical rehabilitation strategies for different FND presentations
5. To understand the roles and treatment approaches used by core members of a multidisciplinary team
6. To understand strategies that enable a psychologically informed approach to rehabilitation
7. To be able to adapt treatment to the needs of young people
8. To consider ways that the patient perspective may shape your clinical interaction
